Baby In The Cradle

Babies Minor Maladies

Babies can have a ton of little issues, and we worry ourselves silly over them, though most are no real threat to baby's health.

Here are a list of the most common little ailments, how to treat them at home, and when to call the doctor.

  1. Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is caused by baby's bottom being constantly exposed to wetness.

For most babies, changing their diaper a little more often and applying an over the counter cream are enough to solve the problem.

If all your measures don't work, or if the rash looks different than a typical diaper rash, call the doctor.

  2. Cradle Cap

Cradle cap is the presence of scales on the baby's scalp, and usually occurs in very young infants.

It is actually a form of dermatitis, and usually is not bothersome to the child.

For most babies, a massage using petroleum jelly followed by a shampoo will take care of the problem.

Try this at every bath until the problem stops recurring.

Cradle cap is worsened by sweating, so keep your baby's head cool, avoiding the use of hats.

If these measures don't work, your doctor can prescribe an ointment or shampoo.

Babies typically outgrow cradle cap within the first six months of life.

  3. Mystery Fever

Nearly all babies have this at one time or another.

A low grade fever, with no other accompanying symptoms.

If your baby is under two months of age, you should seek medical attention with any fever.

Otherwise, as long as the fever doesn't go above 102°F, you need not treat it unless it is making your baby uncomfortable or unable to sleep.

Fever is the body's way of fighting infection, so don't rush to treat a fever, if your baby is otherwise healthy.

Keep her cool, give her plenty of fluids, watch and wait.

Talk to your doctor about his guidelines regarding when to call him concerning a fever.

Regardless, any fever which reaches 105° rectally, or a fever accompanied by signs of dehydration (infrequent urination, sunken fontanel, dry lips), or a feverish baby who has a stiff neck, is limp or has purple spots on the skin, should be treated immediately.

These are three of the most common minor baby ailments.

Though it's comforting to know how to treat these at home, never hesitate to call your doctor if you think it's necessary.

A Mother's intuition is a powerful thing.

If you think something's amiss, it probably is, so check it out, even if it's only to satisfy your own mind.

Baby Slings - Still A Great Choice For Babywearing

With so many different kinds of baby carriers to choose from, why do many babywearing parents recommend baby slings? We all know that baby carriers are meant to let parents use both of their hands while holding and carrying their baby close to their body. These carriers will also help form a special bond between parents and the baby. But aside from the convenience and practicality, what are the other things that set baby slings apart from other types of baby carriers? Why should you choose baby slings over the others?

Baby slings are lighter than the other types of baby carriers. Because it made of only cloth or fabric, you can easily make it small by folding it so it would fit inside any type of bag. It is compact enough making it perfect to be used when you are going out with your baby like going to the grocery or mall. This is also perfect for traveling so you will not have any difficulty in carrying your baby.

Another reason why you should choose a baby sling is because there are plenty of choices available. You can choose from its many designs and prints and they also come in almost every color that you will prefer. Even if you will have to learn the basic skills of putting on some specific types of baby slings, you will find that baby slings are very easy to use after all. There are ring slings, pouches and adjustable pouches.  Each has its own advantages. The pouch type baby slings are probably the easiest baby carrier to use because all you have to do is to put it over one of your shoulder and around your body. It is very important to get the right size of the pouch type baby sling because unlike ring slings and adjustable pouches, these baby slings are not adjustable.  Usually this makes pouches unsuitable for sharing by different sized caregivers.  Bag slings are not recommended because the fabric tends to cover the babies face while in the cradle position.  This makes it difficult to monitor babies positioning and breathing.

Baby slings will also be able to protect your privacy when nursing or breastfeeding your baby in a public place or area. The tail or the excess cloth from a ring sling can be used as a drape to cover your breast. Even while using a pouch you can benefit from extra coverage from the top rail of the pouch while nursing.

Babywearing parents can also carry their baby in many different positions to accommodate their baby through many developmental stages.  Most sling type baby carriers can be used for newborns and older babies. From the cradle position for newborns to the hip hold for babies six months and older, your baby will be covered. Just make sure that you will get a baby sling that high quality and would be able to support your baby’s weight.

Baby slings are also the easiest to clean because they are made of fabrics. You’ll just have to put them in your washer when it is time for them to get cleaned and they would be as good as new. Baby slings have been around since long before modern society, and they are still being used until now because most parents love all the advantages that they give. Even if there are some modern versions of baby carriers, baby slings are still around simply because they are still one of the best
