What is it about rocking the cradle that puts the baby to sleep?
Am just wondering how motion could bring ease and comfort to the human infant while adults (me, at least) would rather prefer not be in motion when trying to sleep. Am just curious. I also posted this in this category as there might be a scientific explanation to it
Repetitive monotonous stimuli, such as the pendulum movement, (a craddle, hammock, etc), and others, such as a predictable muffled sound repeated at predictable times, have the effect to create a "predictable" or soothing environment, that favours the secretion of endorphins and melatonin in the brainstem
The younger the person, the more efficient the mechanism.
It also happens in adults, that travel, for example, in a train, where the gaps of the rails provoke a predictable "clacking" noise, that causes sleepiness,,,,any change in velocity, breaks the monotony, and the gaps between sounds, causing arousal and waking up....
